My theology of healing
Because I am a Christian and I believe in a loving God and an all powerful God and a God who cares about my daily life, and because I have been challenged with this disease, I have had to search the Scriptures and bare my heart before God to reconcile these difficult realities.
First off, I am young and have young children. And I am a Christian. Does that make my diagnosis worse? It is hard to watch a young family struggle. But early death has come to younger and more selfless people than I, with more faith than I. Death is the great enemy, the final foe to be defeated, and I believe the key stroke foretelling death’s demise has already been given. Sin is conquered and so is sickness. I still sin and still get sick but the Kingdom of God is breaking through in victory culminating in Christ’s full perfection of my tarnished soul and body. I believe that “breaking through” may very well include my physical healing from ALS, what would be a miracle. Either way I echo the manifesto declared before the fiery furnace: my God is able to save me and he will save me and even if he does not I will still worship him and him alone.
Can he be kind and allow my slow decay? Can he be kind and allow any death? Death of any sort seems not right to me. Yet here we are, in the giant parade of humanity throughout time moving from birth to grave. “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Psalms 90:12 ESV This life is precious, death grieves us but there is more. More that we do not see yet.
There is much I do not understand. But if I believe the Bible’s testimony that God is truly all knowing and all powerful and is the source of love, then the existence of suffering and death does not indicate that God is weak or unloving but instead that my perspective is limited. I guess perhaps I am not all knowing after all...
Others have spoken on this much more eloquently, so here is teaching that has helped me.
